EARLY MORNING VISITORS: I heard the firetruck first. Not a siren but the roast of that big diesel engine. I watched it pull into the Eastside drive at the apartments. Very shortly after the EMS arrived. They unloaded the gurney and equipment bag and stood waiting. Soon they reloaded back into the ambulance. Then they and the firetruck drove around to the West side of the buildings. Unless something gets posted on the chat line we'll never know what was going on.

MALL: I stopped at QuikTrip and picked up some oil and an iced tea before coming to the mall. The oil I put in the vehicle before I left Kwik Trip. When I arrived at the mall I opened the gate, came in, and closed the gate behind me before getting dressed. About 11:30 Tyler opened the gate and came in. Jack was there also. We were too busy for me to take any notes. From 12 to 6 it was business as usual with a lunch break from 3 to 4. From 6 to 7 it was Pet Night. This was the first time I had hosted the pets and didn't really know what to expect. All the pets were dogs which surprised me. I was also surprised at how well behaved the dogs were.

WEATHER: MALL: it was a mostly busy day for Santa and a somewhat busy day for the photographer. This is day 8 Jack and I were here at 11:00. We hit the ground running. I saw a Rowan Lydia Liam Luna maylee and cash before I had a chance to even make any notes. I had a pre-toddler who came for photos. He was dressed in a green Santa suit. A second grade boy and his sixth grade sister came in PJs for photos. 3-year-old prior came for his photos. A 9th grade girl wants a baby brother. I told her I was in the toymaker business and if she would have to ask her mother. From 2:00 to 3:00 Santa was very busy, the photographer not so much. Lunch from 3:00 to 4:00. 4 to 5:00 busy with photos. 6-month-old Matsumoto came for photos. 6-year-old Remy has had trouble staying on the good list and her grandmother asked me to point that out to her. But I did show her that as of yesterday she was on the good list so keep up the good work.
HEALTH: Heart Rate 67 bpm, BP 119/73, Oxy 95%, Sleep 12:16 AM to 08:27 AM, 07h04m Total, REM 00h39m, Deep 02h58m, Light 04h27m, Awake 00h07m, 100% of Goal, 2.1 Events per hour, Weight 280
YESTERDAY: I arrived at 1:45 and unlocked the gate, got dressed and waited for the photographer to arrive. Jack is by himself this afternoon. Our first visitors had a 2:00 appointment. They were all in their late teens, maybe early twenties. There were four of them and they all said that Cole had been naughty. They kind of threw him under the bus. I said that I'd check the nice list. I looked it up in the big book and his name is on the nice list. He also gave me a picture of Snoopy that he had drawn. Later, 4 late teenage girls brought a younger brother and sister just to visit with Santa. Next was a middle-aged couple that Santa convinced to sit on his knees for their photos. A five-year-old girl dragged Mom and Grandma across the mall to see me. They did buy photos. Three teen boys stopped to say what's up. One said he could get me a Kia but it would have the back window broken out. Suspicious. A Hispanic father and son stop to tell Santa that he wants a bike and electric scooter. No photos. Two young men came to shake hands with Santa while the other took photos from off of the set. A couple of post teen boys came, one had white bleached skunk stripe through his hair, the other had a spiked turtle shell backpack and a Hello Kitty glove. They just talked and then left. 18 month old Selena came with her parents who took cell phone photos. A mom bought two very chatty six and seven year old boys for photos. One was explaining algebra to Santa while the other wanted me to give his mother a list of the cookies that I like. A family of five came in to talk with me. They said they'll be back on Wednesday for photos. I had to show them that Ethan was on the nice list. The newborn's name was Dakota. Three special needs girls ages 16, 17, and 18 came with Mom to see Santa. They were full of exuberance. No photos but Mom and Santa had a nice long talk. Later a 6-year-old and a 6-month-old sister came for photos.

HAPPY HOUR:
My intention was for Ella to take the title to Happy hour and hopefully get it eaten so I didn't have to store it. However, I didn't make those intentions clear to Ella. She only sliced off a tiny bit of breast meat to take. After coming home tonight,I removed the legs with thighs and the wings and bagged them in Ziplocs. I sliced off the rest of the breast and bagged it also. I then put the carcass in the Instapot to slow cook overnight. Maybe I can have Ella, while I'm at work, pick the remaining meat from the bones and save the broth.

COFFEE KLATSCH: This morning, Dianna, Michelle, Jo, Sandy, Suzie, Ella and I gathered for our regular coffee klatsch. We chatted and caught up on each other's lives over steaming cups of coffee. However, my bride and I had to cut our visit short as we had an appointment with the case manager at HCCM.

HCCM: It was time for our annual renewal of eligibility for the free food program. As we walked to our appointment, my mind was filled with a mixture of emotions- gratitude for the support we received from HCCM, but also a little bit of anxiety. Nevertheless, we arrived and were greeted by the kind case manager who made us feel at ease. After going through the necessary paperwork and documentation, we were relieved to find out that we were still eligible for the program. This experience reminded me of the importance of such organizations in helping those in need, and I am grateful for their constant support. Our coffee klatsch may have been cut short, but it was a reminder of the strong community we have created through our regular gatherings. And as always, what we have no room for or no need of, will be passed along to those who can use it. Nothing goes to waste. John 6:12 says, "When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, 'Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted'"
TWO PM COFFEE: This was the restart of a Coffee Time originally begun to give careergivers a chance to bring their charges to the Coffee and then have an hour for themselves. Before the Coffee Meeting began the coffee that was going to be prepared was stolen. Another bag of coffee and a filter had gotten from the office. Management was not happy about it.
NEWS: 1. The Justice Department made a mistake when they didn't show the full grand jury the updated charges against James Comey. This could cause problems for the government's case against Comey. Instead of showing the revised charges to everyone, they only showed it to the person in charge of the grand jury.
2. The Netherlands took control of Nexperia to avoid being blacklisted by the United States, but China blocked exports in response. This caused disruptions in the auto industry, with companies like Honda cutting production. After talks between Trump and Xi, China lifted the ban and the Netherlands returned control of Nexperia to its Chinese owners Wingtech Technology.
3. Scientists have developed a new way to deliver insulin without using needles. They created a special type of material that allows insulin to pass through the skin easily. This could mean that people with diabetes might no longer need painful injections. This breakthrough could also be used to deliver other types of medicine through the skin.
4. Iran is experiencing its worst drought in decades, leading to a severe water crisis. In response, officials are considering rationing water and possibly evacuating the capital, Tehran. The situation has been exacerbated by international sanctions and past airstrikes, but the current drought is having an even greater impact. This shows how natural disasters can surpass human-made challenges in their potential for devastation.
WEATHER:
MALL: day 6 Zack and Doug we're working before coming to the mall we re-registered for hccm. Just as I was coming out to the set at 2:00, it started raining really really really hard. There were two couples waiting. There was a 3-year-old boy who wasn't sure about sitting with Santa. Next was a three almost four your old girl who wanted number blocks for Christmas. She thought she was getting them today from Santa. Next was a four month old Amelia who wanted nothing more than to sleep. Her parents wanted pictures with her eyes open and her double chin out of sight. Really? Audrey was the next one with her grandmother she just wanted to visit. They'll be back sometime when she's dressed for photos. Emerson and Marley were my next visitor Marley was a baby and Emerson a toddler. Emerson would not smile; she just sat with her thumb in her mouth. Then a Spanish-speaking 6-year-old came for a hug, that's all he wanted. Shortly after 6:00 this evening twin 3 year old boys who speak only Spanish came to Santa. Using a translator on Dad's phone they ask for cell phones. Shortly afterward Maxwell and Kemi came to visit. They'll be back for photos. Santa found both of their names in his nice list book which surprised Mom and Dad. Not because the kids weren't good but that Kemi’s name was actually in the book.
BINGO: the game went well and Ella had hello clearing things away after the game. It just wasn't done exactly as she wanted it done.

BREAKFAST: This morning, I decided to switch up my usual breakfast routine and make something different - oven baked pancakes. However, as I was preparing the batter, I realized that the recipe called for ingredients typically found in waffles, such as eggs and oil. This made me question whether I was actually making pancakes or waffles. After some research, I discovered that oven baked pancakes are technically considered waffles because of the added eggs and oil. Despite the technicalities, the end result was a delicious and fluffy breakfast treat that had a crispy exterior and a soft, warm center. The aroma filled my kitchen as I topped the waffles with a drizzle of syrup. It was the perfect way to start my day, and I couldn't help but feel proud of myself for trying something new and creating a tasty twist on a classic breakfast dish. Overall, my homemade oven baked pancakes (or waffles) were a success and I'm already looking forward to making them again in the future.
COFFEE KLATSCH: Dianna, Jo, Grace, Suzie, Val, Michelle, Joan, Sandy, Avis, Ella, and I were at coffee this morning. Jo commented that, since we all see each other every day and multiple times a day, there's seldom anything new to talk about.

FAST TRACK: My bride and I had a fun afternoon playing games before I left for the mall. We decided to have a mini competition and played a few rounds of our favorite game. It was a close match, and I believe we came out even on the number of games we each had won. It was such a great time spending quality moments with her and enjoying each other's company. We both love playing games, and it was a great way to bond and have some friendly competition. As I left for the mall, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that no matter what the outcome, we had a blast together. I am grateful for these simple yet meaningful moments that remind me of how lucky I am to have her as my partner in life. Playing games may seem like a small thing, but it's moments like these that make our relationship stronger and more enjoyable.

MALL: Today was day five of this season as of 4:00 they had taken two sets of photos. Santa had at least four visitors that did not buy photos but said that they'd be back when they were dressed for photos. We have one new member Jack. At closing time Santa had a boy and a girl who will spend the holidays with grandparents in India. We had trouble getting the boy to look at the camera. He kept looking at the overhead flash. Finally I told the photographer that we were not going to look at the camera. I had him talking with me and we got a really good picture of him talking to Santa.
NEWS: 1. The government shutdown (the longest ever) ended on November 14. The shutdown cost the US economy an estimated 60,000 private-sector jobs and an estimated $14B per week or $84B in all, an expected dip of 1% to 2% in annualized GDP growth.
Santa arrived at the mall on the 15th. Coincidence?
2. Gen Z protesters in Mexico are angry about corruption and crime in the country. They are especially upset with President Sheinbaum for not stopping drug violence. The protests turned violent in Mexico City, with many people, including police officers, getting injured.
3. David Richardson, who was in charge of FEMA, quit after six months. He faced criticism for how FEMA handled the floods in Texas that killed over 130 people. Richardson didn't have experience in disaster management and was not easy to reach during the crisis. He took over as FEMA acting head after his predecessor was fired for disagreeing with changes to FEMA's responsibilities.
4. Amazon's Zoox and Alphabet-owned Waymo are rival companies offering robotaxi rides in San Francisco. Zoox builds its own electric vehicles for this purpose, while Waymo installs its technology in cars from other manufacturers. Both companies are competing for dominance in the city's autonomous ride-sharing market. For example, Zoox's boxy electric vehicles are now operating in San Francisco and Las Vegas, offering rides in limited areas for free, while Waymo charges for rides and has expanded its routes to highways in multiple cities.,v

There was a tangy key lime pie, a rich and creamy pumpkin pie, and some Goldfish Cinnamon Roll Grahams for a sweet and crunchy treat. But the real highlight of our coffee time was the Milano Chai Latte cookies. These perfectly spiced and buttery cookies were the perfect accompaniment to our cozy conversation and laughter. MALL: day four at the mall 2 to 7:00. I left home early today just before 12:00 because I was taking lots of coins to the credit union. I wanted to turn the coins into folding money. It came to a little over $14. I then stopped at Murphy USA and and put $10 worth of gas into Dasher the car. I then stopped at Walmart and bought a pair of Santa reading glasses. All of this still left me with lots of time at the mall to change clothes. Then to wait for the manager to show up. Zack said we had one appointment today and that was for 5:00 this evening. It is early in the shift and Santa has seen three children and Zack has made two photo package sales. About 3:15 Tyler came in to relieve Zach. At 3:45 Zack went off to the office to get a load of picture frames and candy canes. At 4:30 the sun came out. I thought the lights had gone on in the mall. The 5:00 appointment showed up about 5:15. I decided what to do with the broken candy canes that I hate to give out to the children. I'm putting them in my Altoids tin and using them as breath mints. Shortly after 6:00 a family of grown people brought their elderly parents for photos with Santa.

The combination of the flaky crust and sweet peaches made for a perfect morning snack. I counted it as breakfast. MALL: day three at the mall. One sweet little 1-year-old girl and her parents were waiting for Santa to open. Santa got some great hugs and Mom and Dad got some great photos. Before coming to the mall Santa and Mrs Claus readyed a bunch of Christmas cards and letters ready for the mail. First at the mall and I've only seen half a dozen in the mall that aren't employees or delivery people. Up until 4:00 only a couple of folks have bought photos. A few have come to talk with Santa and a few have come to ask prices and or days.
About 5:00 the lights come on in the mall. One of the regular Mall walkers stopped to visit. He is or was a preacher. We always have deep conversations. The mall marketing director brought some “elf hats”. They're just paper headbands. For Santa to assemble and give out. So far I've given two away. I had a tall third grade girl who really likes writing. She wants a real dollhouse not a Barbie where she can put furniture in it. About 5:30 a family with a baby and a carriage and a little girl who was past the toddler stage and into the running stage. She came in just to ask, “Where are the toys?” I said they were still at the North pole. Just before 6:00 Zack got his third sale for the day. A couple of !maybe 2-year-olds) came in to see me. Mom said they'll be back when they're dressed for photos. They left wearing elf hats.

SANTA at the mall. After yesterday's roadblocks (literally) I decided to leave for work a little early today. That gave me a little extra time to make the transformation from Tom to Santa. Santa was busier than the photographer. Quite a few came to see Santa that did not want photos. That is one of the things that I appreciate about the photography company, they make it clear that visits to Santa are always free. You only pay if you have photos taken. Santa had a family with two special needs children. The young boy may have been on the autism spectrum. The older girl would go from calm to super active and back. I'm guessing something akin to tourette's syndrome. Also today a father brought in a young man of highschool age who was over stimulated to see Santa. The father explained that going to the mall was part of his therapy. Santa was also visited by the Easter Bunny. Well, it was a man wearing fake glasses with a rabbit face. He sat and talked for a while about living in a group home and working in a grocery store where he bags groceries and brings the carts in. There were sisters of high school and college age who came to just visit with Santa and tell me what they wanted for Christmas. I had to let them know that Santa wasn't able to help with tuition money - unless they were attending Santa's University.
LAUNDRY: Ella washed more clothes today and hung out draped them around the apartment to dry.

SANTA is at Lakeline Mall, day one for the season. There were four or five families waiting for Santa to open at 11:00. We had taken 16 sets of photos in the first hour and a half. It remained fairly steadfast until around 3:00 for our break. The photography company had set a goal of making $2,000 in sales today. By the end of the day at 7:00 we had exceeded that amount. It was a busy opening day. Now having told you that let me back up and tell you about getting to the mall this morning it was interesting. There was an accident at the intersection of 1431 and Bell avenue. Cop cars and fire trucks along with the EMTs were in the middle of the intersection directing traffic. It was moving very very very slowly. I sat there with a growing need to use the bathroom. When traffic finally moved and I was able to go through the intersection I stopped at Burger King to use the bathroom. When I arrived at the mall I pushed the button for the elevator. Nothing happened. I pushed the button again and the button did not light up. I took the escalator down and discovered the elevator doors were propped open by a couple of slippery floor signs. Amazingly, I was still on time. I got dressed and punched in on the app on my phone. This evening I punched out an app on my phone.

FIFTY PLUS: The meal was turkey tortellini, Texas green beans, and red velvet cake. Our speakers were the pastor and his son who spoke about thankfulness.
SANTA: Yesterday we went to the mall so that I could unpack the Santa suits and verify receiving everything. Today we went back to the mall with a wagon load of Santa supplies from home. TP was high on the list as well as bleach tablets for the toilet. It is pretty gross. No. Scratch that. It's not pretty. It is just gross. I also took hairspray and cosmetics to make Santa “picture perfect”. Seriously. Several tens of thousands photos will be taken again this year. Santa's got to look his best in every one. I also took three books to use as Santa. One is a children's picture book to help settle some children. Another book is a huge book the size of a large unabridged collage dictionary that is Santa's Nice List. It has every known name worldwide. The last book contains the words and music of 100 Christmas songs and hymns. That's to give Santa some way to pass the time when it's slow at the beginning of the season.
HAPPY HOUR: There was a good turnout for the week's end potluck. Everything was high in sugar except the deviled eggs and the taquitos.

Democratic leaders wanted to tie reopening the government to extending these subsidies, but the bill does not include that provision.

WEATHER:
NEWS: An early winter blast hit the eastern United States this week, bringing unusually cold temperatures and snow to millions of people. This storm was caused by a strong cold front pulling arctic air from Canada. Some areas experienced record low temperatures and heavy snowfall, with even southern states like Florida feeling the chill. This winter storm arrived almost three weeks before the official start of winter. As a result, many people had to bundle up and deal with icy conditions much earlier than expected.
SANTA: At last! I was able to go to the mall and unpack my suits. There were several surprises. Everything fits, even the shirts! This is the first time in all these years at the mall that the shirt sleeves were long enough. I've been wearing my own shirts for years now. The second surprise was that two of the shirts have collars and are western style with pearl snap buttons. There is also a red cowboy hat and a black belt with a large Santa buckle. That's never been part of the outfit before.

BREAKFAST: Grits. That's it. Just grits. No gravy. Butter and salt for mine and milk and brown sugar for Ella's.
TCHATCHKE: Today in the apartments, the festive spirit was in full swing as ornaments and decorations were being put out all around. Much schlock and schatz was available at the annual Holiday Craft Sale. The do-it-yourself crowd showing what unskilled labor can accomplish. I'm sure I must have passed over some treasures amongst the offerings. As I walked around the common areas, I couldn't help but feel a little uplifted by the atmosphere and the sight of people coming together to sell their goods. I took a moment to pet some dogs, before heading back home. Even though there were many unique items on display, I easily resisted the urge to purchase anything and returned home with nothing more and nothing less than what I had started with.
WEATHER:
LUNCH: I prepared spaghetti with meatballs in a savory tomato sauce. The meatballs were purchased not homemade. They were purported to be authentic Italian pork meatballs. They seemed to me to be spiced hotter than any meatballs served to me by Italians. I liked them, though they were too much for my bride. She is not a fan of the red sauce and prefers Alfredo, which tends to turn my stomach.

OVER THE HILL GANG: As I walked into the room, my eyes were immediately drawn to the table full of clothing. It was as if someone had dumped an entire wardrobe onto the table, and the people surrounding it were like vultures, circling and picking at the clothes. The image was almost unsettling, and it made me think of buzzards circling and picking at a carcass. The constant shuffling and rustling of fabric only added to the comparison.
Charlie was feeling quite creative for lunch and decided to make what he proudly called a cordon bleu casserole. He began by layering chicken, ham, cheese, and noodles in a casserole dish. As a finishing touch, he added a crispy baked crumb crust on top. The aroma from the oven filled the kitchen. Of course, no meal is complete without side dishes and desserts. Charlie's cordon bleu casserole lunch was a delicious and satisfying meal. It was clear that Charlie had put a lot of thought and effort into creating this delightful lunch spread. He successful feed 49 people today.
WEATHER:
DOCTORS: TOM had a routine appointment at his urology office for a blood draw, but it turned out to be more than routine. The nurse, Marilu, had tried to draw blood three times but was unsuccessful each time. Frustrated, she eventually gave up and a different nurse stepped in to successfully complete the task. As a result, Tom ended up with bandaids on the back of each hand and on each arm at the inside of his elbows. Despite the initial difficulty, he was relieved to have the blood draw completed and was grateful for the perseverance of the second nurse. Overall, the experience at the urology office was a reminder of the importance of patience and resilience in medical procedures.
ELLA was relieved to finally be able to visit the surgical office of the doctor who had replaced her left shoulder. This was not her first experience with the surgeon, as he had also replaced her right shoulder several years ago. The fact that she was able to return to the same doctor for further treatment showed that she had received excellent care and had built a strong relationship with him. Both Ella and the doctor were pleased with the progress of her recovery. With her new shoulder, Ella was able to regain her mobility and was excited to return to her normal activities. The doctor had done an exceptional job and Ella was grateful for his expertise. As she left the office, the doctor scheduled a follow-up appointment for after the first of the new year, giving Ella something to look forward to as she continued on her journey towards complete recovery.

BAKING: This afternoon Ella made a cobbler to take tomorrow to Over The Hill Gang. While she had the oven hot I made a Depression Cake. It is so named because it was popular during the Great Depression when butter, milk, and eggs were hard to come by. The cake blends flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, oil, vinegar, vanilla, and water. I'm going to frost it and take it to coffee tomorrow morning. I'll let you know what the consensus is about the cake
GAMES: My bride Ella and I spent the evening playing Fast Track, a fast-paced and competitive board game. We played four intense games and to my disappointment, she emerged victorious every time. As we were engrossed in our game, I couldn't help but notice the group of people in the background playing Skip-Bo, a popular card game. The sound of their laughter and friendly banter added to the lively atmosphere. As I looked through the windows, I could see others sitting on the pool patio, enjoying the beautiful evening. Some were having drinks, while others were simply chatting and soaking up the peaceful ambiance. It was a perfect evening spent with friends, surrounded by fun games and good company..

News: 1. The Trump administration is giving some money to the food stamp program (SNAP) this month because of the government shutdown. They are using $4.65 billion from a special fund to help cover half of the $8 billion needed for food stamps for 42 million people. Some of the money will also go towards administrative costs for the states, as well as food assistance in Puerto Rico and American Samoa. However, this funding does not include help for new applicants or disaster assistance. The special fund will run out of money once this is done.
2. The Senate reconvened yesterday with no funding vote scheduled. President Donald Trump has urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to pass legislation. A House-passed bill previously failed to advance in the Senate 13 times.
3. Waymo, an autonomous vehicle company, is expanding its robotaxi service to Detroit, Las Vegas, and San Diego. They plan to offer 1 million trips per week by the end of 2026. The company started testing in Silicon Valley and has since launched in Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin. They will soon expand to Denver, Miami, Nashville, London, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Initially, human drivers will operate the vehicles to map city streets, but eventually the cars will drive themselves. This week, Waymo will introduce self-driving Jaguar I-Pace and Zeekr RT vehicles to the new markets.

SIXTY years makes a little difference. I'm now twice the man I used to be.
COMMENT: “You can't take it with you.” The admonition to not store up earthly possessions is quite clear. Does this mean it is sinful to save and invest? Does Jesus mean we should not accumulate wealth? No. Jesus is concerned about our priorities. This is why he warns against greedily hoarding earthly treasures. Proverbs 13:11, 22; Genesis 41:25–36; Matthew 25:14–30 clearly show the prudence of proper financial planning and saving. Being cautious and responsible with our money are good values for Christians. For me, it is helpful to remember that it ALL belongs to God. I'm just temporarily MANAGING it for Him.
