2025 March

2025 March 31 Monday in Leander

COFFEE KLATSCH: Fran, Donna, Muriel, Dianna, Michelle, Joan, Grace, Suzie, Val, Ella, Donna, Sandy, and I were at coffee. I was the last to arrive.

BREAKFAST:  Bacon and egg for breakfast. Ella had an English muffin while I had a bagel. Ella had some trouble eating bagels because they are too tough to bite and chew.

LUNCH:  I made chicken fried chicken using the recipe below. The only change I made was instead of slicing the chicken into thin strips I pounded them flat before beginning with flour and egg. So chicken-fried chicken, real mashed potatoes, real country gravy, leftover BBQ beans from yesterday's potluck, and some tomato wedges. It turned out really well. I'm patting myself on the back.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 “Your boasting is not a good thing. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all of the dough? 7 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough, as you really are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

2025 March 30 Sunday in Leander and Liberty Hill

WORSHIP:  Worship service was once again in the chapel. I was liturgist today. I think that this may have been pastor Brad’s last of his series on Broken Hallelujahs. Today the theme was Loss.

5TH SUNDAY:  Cross Tracks Church had a tradition whereby in every month that has five Sundays, on that Sunday we have a potluck meal after worship service. This year March has five Sundays and today was our potluck.

WASH DAY:  Ella chose today to do laundry. Washing, drying, and folding until it was all done.

This ended up being the only meal I ate today though I did snack a little. My stomach just didn't feel up to having much in it.

Ephesians 5:8-14  8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,
    rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

BREAKFAST:  Someone had donated these breakfast meals to the apartments in-house food pantry. Scrambled egg, potato, carrot, sausage, and cheese with a side of apple crisp. The English muffins were also donated. Today's breakfast was provided by God.

WEATHER:  69°/63° Cloudy. Showers likely this morning then a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. South winds around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

LUNCH:  I copied cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and pork belly. They went into my Instapot with chicken stock and were seasoned with black pepper and Lowery seasoned salt. Tasted pretty darn good to me.

HAPPY HOUR:  There were about a dozen at the end of the week potluck. (More may have arrived after I left) Ella made a chicken and stuffing casserole as well as a blueberry cobbler. I was only there for a few minutes because I wasn't feeling well.

OTHG; Today at Over The Hill Gang there were 35 people to enjoy the baked potatoes with a beef stroganoff topping. I won a door prize of yogurt pretzels. Ella played bingo until two o'clock. I played Five Crowns with Nathern until he had to leave.

MEDS: While Ella was hosting bingo I restocked four weeks worth of pill sorters. Four compartments per day to sort morning, evening, bedtime, and supplements. It works out to 25 to 30 pills a day. It took me the better part of an hour to do all four weeks worth of tablets. My prescriptions are usually for a 90 day supply so I generally try to refill a seven day pill sorter once it's empty. That way I give myself a 3 week cushion to reorder, receive, and restock. However, for no apparent reason, I hadn't kept up with my own system. I now have a few that I'll need to request refills for before I can replenish the current week once it is empty.

WEATHER:  68°/55° Showers. Patchy fog. A slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of rain near 100 percent.

The rain began very early this morning and continued all day. Never heavy and never a storm, just rain.

BINGO at the Hills:  Ella hosted bingo which she does every week except for times that we are unavailable on a Thursday evening. Last week when we were at Arik and Jenny's dog sitting she wasn't here to call bingo. This evening I went up to take a photo but I'd waited too long and three games were over and she was cleaning up.

Colossians 3:15-17. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

2025 March 26 Wednesday in Leander and Liberty Hill

COFFEE KLATSCH:  My bride and I did not go to coffee this morning. We left for Liberty Hill and Cross Tracks Church instead.

CHURCH:  On our way to play canasta at Over The Hill Gang we stopped at the church office to pick up the sermon I asked them to print for me. This is the sermon that I will use on Resurrection Sunday at the Hills of Leander. Having it printed and in a folder will make it easier to see while I'm preaching.

CANASTA AT OTHG:  All five of the regular card players were there but not all at the same time. To begin with Sandy wasn't there. So we played partners. Nathern and I played against the team of Anne and Ella. We completed one hand just as Sandy arrived. At that point we stopped playing partners. Several hands into that Nathern had to leave. It was late enough at that time that we chose to quit for the day.

LUNCHTIME:  It was around noon when we quit playing cards and I asked Ella if she wanted to have Subway® for lunch. Yes. I had received a pop-up ad for any foot long sandwich for $6.99. When we arrived at Subway® Ella ordered a child size ham and cheese. I told them about the $6.99 deal and was told it was only good if it was ordered online. I sat at a table and ordered a foot long meatball marinara on Italian herb bread with provolone cheese, jalapenos chips, and a ice tea. I had to wait 15 minutes for the order too go through but I saved $3.

HOME: Once back at the apartment I lay down to read and woke up a little after four. Ella asked when I wanted to leave for Refuel. I took a bathroom break and was ready.

REFUEL:  We arrived back at Cross Tracks Church slightly before five o'clock. We sat and visited with friends while the serving table was stocked with salad fixin’s and pizzas. We filled our plates as the pastor arrived. He asked a blessing and we ate. A little before six Pastor Brad asked us to discuss how and why we were members of the CTC congregation. We each told our story. Then Brad introduced tonight's topic of Methodist’s (as instructed by John Wesley) views on the subject of grace.

WEATHER:  84°/66° Mostly cloudy. South winds 5 to 10 mph becoming southeast 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Cloudy. A slight chance of showers with isolated thunderstorms in the evening then a 30% chance of showers after midnight. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph.

BOXES:  On the way home from Refuel we stopped at the Hill Country Community Ministries building to drop off some boxes for them to use.

HOME AGAIN:  Once back home I punched some holes in the sermon pages I had picked up this morning. I had finished placing them into a 3-ring folder when Ella said there's Chinese food up at Hump Day. Most of the time we don't attend this midweek potluck even though we are generally home before it begins at seven-thirty. However I couldn't turn down Chinese food.

BAKING:  While I was enjoying Hump Day Ella was at home preparing a strawberry cobbler to take to Over The Hill Gang tomorrow. She was done when I came home about eight forty-five.

LAUNDRY:  Ella spent a good portion of today sorting, washing, drying, and folding clothes. This is something she normally does on Friday or Saturday. However we were not home on Friday and Saturday. We were not home on Sunday except for a few hours at bedtime. I had taken my to-go bag to the kids’ house. So I put those freshly cleaned clothes, that I had worn those five days, back into the to-go bag. I really appreciate Ella taking the time to do this laundry.

DOG SITTING: Day five of the care and feeding of this strange looking creature. Her tongue is too long and it's is nearly impossible for her to close her mouth without it hanging out. Also she has heterochromia, her eyes don't match. She's very affectionate maybe even too affectionate. I don't like being licked on the face.

TUMMY:  Shortly after breakfast I began a series of bathroom runs. I'm convinced that it had nothing to do with breakfast since it is our normal breakfast menu. It continued to be bothersome throughout the day.

Romans 8:38-39 - For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2025 March 22 Saturday in Round Rock

DOG SITTING: This cute puppy has a strong dislike for squirrels in her yard. Every time she is let out, she starts barking and doesn't stop until she is brought back inside. Unfortunately, this behavior is causing a disturbance. Though I would love to let her enjoy the outside world, I find myself constantly having to bring her in.

Growing up, I had pets who were free to roam outside on our acreage. They were not indoor animals like this puppy. Perhaps because they had the freedom to run and explore, they didn't feel the need to constantly bark at every little thing like falling leaves or the wind rustling through the trees.

It's a reminder that animals, like humans, thrive when they have the space and freedom to be themselves. Despite the inconvenience, I can't help but love this dog and her feisty spirit.

SUPPER:  For supper we ate the last of the leftover pizza.

WEATHER:  83°/66° Partly cloudy in the morning then clearing. South winds 15 to 20 mph becoming mostly cloudy with gusts up to 30 mph.

PACKING: After supper we packed up our stuff and loaded most of it into the car. The game bag was held out in case we wanted to play sometime while we waited. The other bag not taken to the car was the food stuffs. A few are refrigerated. I placed a bag of ice in on top of the insulated bag. However I chose to not take it to the car untill we are leaving.

GOODBYE:  Around seven o'clock we took Blue Bell outside for her potty break. I prepared her food and water so that it would be there when she came back inside.

HOMEWARD bound: The text from Arik said, “Saturday we are supposed to land at 8:30 pm. After bags and driving will probably be nearly 10 pm.” Since the kids are due to land at 8:30 this evening and home by 10. We will leave before they get here. I will wait until after sundown so that I will not be driving straight into the setting sun.

CROSSED WIRES:  About 8:30 I sent a text to my son asking if they had landed yet. He responded, “Not until tomorrow.” It's no big deal to stay another night and day. So we changed plans and brought some of our stuff back into the house. I have my CPAP machine and my phone charger. Tomorrow I'll bring my hearing aids charger in also.

Our neighbor had held them for us. Now I need to determine why they were delivered to our door instead of arriving through the mail. While we were home I took a picture of our car reflected in our bedroom window.

COFFEE KLATSCH:  We didn't make it to coffee this morning. We were packing and loading the car for our stay at Arik and Jenny's.

CANASTA at OTHG:  we began play with the five of us but Nathern was called away to pick up a sick grandchild from school. With him gone we had an even number and played partners. Anne and Ella against Sandy and myself. We played two games with each team winning one.

OWWIE: When we arrived at Over The Hill Gang this morning we found that some woman had crashed her vehicle into the wall. I don't know the particulars but I'm confused as how she managed to get over and past the bright yellow parking blocks to be able to hit the wall.

DOG SITTING:  We arrived at one thirty and were surprised to find Blue Bell inside the house. I had understood that they were going to leave her in the back yard. She was glad to see us and glad to be let out to pee. She didn't stay out long at all. She wanted in for some lovin’.

OTHG:  Forty two people were at Over The Hill Gang for a lunch of chicken and corn soup, spoon bread, ham and beans, broccoli, scalloped potatoes, lettuce salad, and a plethora of desserts.

OLD CAR:  Gary Spivey drove his 1937 Chevrolet Cabriolet Convertible today. Mr and Mrs Santa Claus have ridden in parades in this fine automobile.

WEATHER:  93°/61° Clear this morning then becoming partly cloudy. West winds 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph becoming southwest this afternoon then south 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph after midnight.

It made it to 90° today. That's not quite as high as predicted but that close enough for me.

NEW PHONES:  Ella received a message from Verizon that she was eligible for a free phone by swapping out her current phone. Her phone was infected with viruses and malware. So changing it for a new clean phone sounded good. I said, “As long as no money changes hands, okay.” We went to the Verizon store and we're assured over and over that the phone was free. And mine was eligible also. And by the way, we could get a free tablet also … just pay the $20 a month for the additional phone line. And taxes. Have to pay the taxes. Oh yes and a one time activation fee for each phone and the tablet. And so four hundred and thirteen dollars later we have our new free phones and tablet. Yay!

HCCM:  We picked up our monthly food package from Hill Country Community Ministries. We were in need of fresh produce and boy, were we ever blessed with the contents of the package. As usual, there were a few items that we either didn't want or couldn't use, or perhaps we simply didn't have enough space in our refrigerator or cupboards. However, we didn't let these items go to waste. Instead, we passed them on to others who were also in need. It was heartwarming to see how a simple act of kindness and generosity from one organization could have a ripple effect and help not just our family, but also those around us. We are grateful for the support and assistance provided by Hill Country Community Ministries, and for the opportunity it gave us to pay it forward and help others in need..

CANASTA at OTHG:  Sandy was ill and did not attend. Nathern and Anne beat Ella and I at cards today. We finished shortly after eleven thirty.

CAR WASH:  Dasher the HHR looked like she had age spots because of the dust dots all over. They were caused by the slight rain from a night ago. It lasted only a couple of minutes which was just enough time to pull the dirt out of the air and leave it on the cars. So we ran her through the car wash to make her shine again.

LUNCH:  Our noon meal consisted of a hamburger, beans, black olives, tomato slices, cucumber, and apple sauce.

For years or insurance covered the cost. However this year they were no longer covered. Rather than pay the $30 each per month we are returning them. I received a shipping label for mine yesterday. Today we stopped at the post office long enough to drop it in the outgoing mail box.

HCCM:  Shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and pastries came home with Ella from the food pantry.

LUNCH:  Before we left home today I had started a pot of corn chowder in the instapot on slow cook. When we returned home I put some frozen biscuits in to bake. Once they were done we had them along with a couple bowls of chowder.

DRY CLEANER:  we took my new vest to the dry cleaner. The first day I wore it I dropped a piece of meat on my chest leaving a grease stain on the vest. The vest cost less than $10 and it'll cost twice that to have it dry cleaned. Is that crazy or what? Maybe I should have tossed it in the washing machine and if it was ruined buy another one … or two … and saved money.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH: Because we stayed at Coffee visiting for so long this morning AND I wanted to take my vest to the dry cleaner AND the only dry cleaner that I knew of was near IHOP AND Ella had asked me to make French toast this morning … so after the dry cleaner we went to IHOP so that Ella could have French toast. It was nearly noon so I chose to have lunch instead of breakfast. I had shrimp and French fries while Ella had French toast and eggs.

OVER THE HILL GANG: Today at Over The Hill Gang was Hat Day as it is every first Thursday of the month. Ella brought my top hat, however, I ended up wearing my trusty cowboy hat instead. For the fun of it I had three aces and a joker tucked into the hat band. The familiar faces of my fellow OTHG members greeted me, and we settled in for a fun-filled afternoon of lunch, laughs, friendly banter, and intense games of 5 Crowns, bingo, Scrabble, and dominos. I feel grateful to be a part of this group of friends who have been through so much together and continue to make memories as we embrace our golden years. I couldn't help but reflect on the bond we share and the joy that comes with being a member of the OTHG.

Today there were forty-four of us gathered for lunch. Charlie prepared a variation of Sloppy Joe's today. It was baked in a large pan with the meat on the bottom and dinner rolls on top. To go with it there were scalloped potatoes, a three bean salad, as well as lettuce and tomato salad. And, of course, plenty of desserts. Ella made a dessert of cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling mixed together with an icing over the top of it. Everything was delicious.                    .

BINGO AT THE HILLS:  As Ella had done for approximately three years now, she hosted bingo in the community room. Tonight, however, there was a group of card players who claimed that they always play cards at six o'clock on Friday nights in the community room. None of the bingo players has ever seen the card players before even though they insisted that they have always been there and that the bingo players weren't. Is this a parallel universe bleeding into ours? Or maybe we are phasing into their universe!

2925 March 05 Wednesday in Leander and Liberty Hill - Lent starts

What in the Sam Hill is that thing?

There, that's better!

BREAKFAST: My plan was to make bacon, egg, and cheese English muffins for breakfast. However the last muffin was beginning to mold. I made scrambled eggs instead

COFFEE KLATSCH:  Michelle, Grace, Suzie, Val, Dianna, Ella, and I were at coffee. There was an oops this morning. Two pots of water were run through the coffee maker without changing the carafe at the bottom. That means a whole lot of coffee ran through the machine and onto the floor. Suzie and Michelle had it nearly cleaned up before I brought a sponge mop from home.

LUNCH:  Before we left OTHG Charlie had prepared a lunch of grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and a salad.

ASH WEDNESDAY:  We attended the noon service in the chapel. The newly refurbished original church is beautiful. I'm glad we could do the imposition

2025 March 04 Tuesday Mardi Gras in Leander and Liberty Hill

PANCAKES:  Happy Pancake Tuesday everyone! Today is a day that many of us look forward to every year - the day where we will indulge in all the fluffy, delicious goodness of pancakes. But did you know that this holiday has its roots in a much bigger and significant event - Fat Tuesday?

For those who may not be familiar, Fat Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, is the last day before the beginning of Lent. This holiday is celebrated in many countries around the world, and it is a time for feasting and indulgence before the 40-day fasting period of Lent begins. The origins of Fat Tuesday can be traced back to Christianity, where it was a way for people to use up all their rich and fatty foods before embarking on a period of fasting and abstinence during Lent.

But how does this tie into pancakes, you may ask? Well, it all goes back to the 17th century in Ireland. While Fat Tuesday was being celebrated in other parts of the world, the Irish had their own version of this holiday - Pancake Tuesday. Like Fat Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday also falls on the same day as Mardi Gras. And just like its counterpart, Pancake Tuesday is a way for people to use up their dairy products before Lent begins.

In Ireland, making pancakes with eggs and milk was a way for people to use up these ingredients before they spoiled during the fasting period of Lent. It was also seen as a way to indulge in something rich and delicious before giving up meat and other indulgent foods. Over time, eating pancakes on this day became a tradition that was passed down through generations.

Today, Pancake Tuesday is still widely celebrated in Ireland and many other countries around the world. People gather with friends and family to enjoy a stack of golden pancakes topped with their favorite toppings - whether it be traditional maple syrup or more adventurous options like Nutella or fresh berries. It has become a day for people to come together, share a meal, and indulge in some much-needed comfort food before the solemnity of Lent.

But Pancake Tuesday is not just about eating pancakes. It's also a time for reflection and preparation for the upcoming season of Lent. Just like how Christians would use Fat Tuesday to consume all the food that they would not be able to eat during Lent, Pancake Tuesday is a reminder for us to use up any excess or unnecessary things in our lives before we embark on a period of self-reflection and sacrifice.

In today's fast-paced world, where we are constantly bombarded with distractions and temptations, Pancake Tuesday serves as a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life - like sitting down with loved ones and enjoying a warm stack of pancakes. It's a time to take a step back and reflect on what truly matters in our lives.

So on this Pancake Tuesday, let's not just focus on indulging in delicious food (although that is definitely an added bonus). Let's also take the time to reflect on our lives and make any necessary changes before we enter into the season of Lent. And remember, while pancakes may seem like a small and insignificant tradition, it holds a much deeper meaning and significance in our lives.

As we bid farewell to Fat Tuesday and welcome the start of Lent tomorrow, let's carry the spirit of Pancake Tuesday with us throughout this season of reflection and sacrifice. And who knows, maybe you'll discover some new traditions or insights while enjoying your stack of fluffy pancakes.

I had mine with an overeasy egg while Ella had hers with maple syrup. How do you eat your pancakes? Happy Pancake Tuesday everyone!

COFFEE KLATSCH:  Now, Susie, Joan, ?, ?, Maureen, Diana, Fran, Donna, Ricky, Andrea, Michelle, Ella, Sandy, Donna, and myself were there for coffee. There were two people who I do not know at the table this morning. Donna brought homemade sweet potato pie and Maureen brought donuts.                 .

EMMAUS:  Charly, Bert, Luther, Manny, and I met at El Mariachi restaurant this morning for our Fourth Day group. We prayed, we gave our devotions, and we discussed connecting to a large group with other churches.

LEANDER FIRE:   When I returned home I was greeted by emergency vehicles blocking the corner. I took the long way around all twelve buildings to park in a spot somewhat near our apartment. I've asked around but I don't know for whom they were here. I hope they're alright.

WEATHER:  72°/50° Windy 35-40 mph gusts. The winds broke the main door to the complex. Every time someone opens it fits out of their hands. It does the same thing when it is being closed. I'm surprised that the glass panel in it hasn't shattered … yet.

INSPECTION: This was the last day for the annual apartments inspection. Not all are examined. They just randomly pick a certain number. I don't think our’s was among those. I don't really know who is inspecting or what they are looking for. Earlier the fire department checked the sprinkler system and smoke detectors in all of the apartments plus the fire extinguishers in the public areas. Everything passed.

2025 March 03 Monday in Leander

COFFEE KLATSCH:  Donna, Sandy, Dianna, Muriel, Joe, Fran, Grace, Ella, Michelle, myself, Jo, Suzie, Val, & Joan discussed the events of the past few days. We had “Happy Hour” Friday night, “Mardi Gras" on Saturday, and Sunday the Life Church fed us and entertained us with a skit by their elementary school children.

BREAKFAST:  This morning, Ella and I decided to collaborate and make a delicious breakfast together. I settled on home baked biscuits and sausage gravy, a classic comfort food that never disappoints. I love the smell of the sausage as I brown it before adding flour to coat the meat. Then all that is need is to add milk and continuously stir until it is properly thickened.

To top it off, Ella also made some mouth-watering strawberry cheesecake muffins which we served warm with on salted butter. Yummy! The combination of savory and sweet flavors was a delightful treat for our taste buds. However, as much as we enjoyed our breakfast, we got so caught up in cooking and eating that we completely forgot about the Chair Yoga session that we had planned to join. It was a shame to miss it. Despite this oversight, we couldn't help but be satisfied with our delicious breakfast creation. It was the perfect way to start off the day, even if it did mean skipping our exercise plan. Perhaps next time, we'll have to set a reminder so we don't forget about our Chair Yoga session. But for now, we'll just have to relish in the memory of our collaborative breakfast and look forward to the next one.

LIFE CHURCH:  Today, LIFE CHURCH had prepared a delicious spread of grilled burgers and hot dogs, along with some tasty side dishes like potato and pasta salads and chips. The food was greatly appreciated by all of us, and it made for a welcome change from our usual Sunday afternoon routine. To add to the joyous atmosphere, the church's elementary school students performed a play about cooperation, reminding us of the importance of working together as a community. They also led us in some uplifting songs that lifted our spirits and brought us closer together. It was heartwarming to see the young ones spreading positive messages and bringing joy to our lives. Overall, it was a wonderful break from our mundane routines, and we are grateful to LIFE CHURCH for their support and thoughtful gestures..

2025 March 01 Saturday in Leander

COFFEE KLATSCH: This morning's coffee group was a lively gathering of friends, with Dianna, Ella, Joan, Suzie, Sandy, Donna, Ricky, Val, Andrea, Avis, and myself all in attendance. As we sipped our cups of coffee, we chatted about the music we had heard the night before, sharing our favorite moments and songs. The conversation then moved to people in our community who were moving out and we expressed our concerns. However, the highlight of our discussion was the upcoming party tonight. We eagerly made plans and shared ideas for what to wear and bring to the celebration. It was nice to catch up with everyone and have such an enjoyable start to our day over a warm cup of coffee.                                                        .

BREAKFAST

LUNCH:  I cooked lentils, shredded carrots, and diced kielbasa in a chicken and ham stock for lunch. It was very good, if I do say so myself. Combined with some homestyle white bread and lots of butter mmm good.
