RAIN: We had some pretty heavy rain during and after church in Liberty Hill. We drove most of the way home in heavy rain. However when we arrived home it had not rained here at all - and still hasn't as I write this.
R&R: That's what we did this afternoon - rest and relaxation.

BREAKFAST: This morning, I decided to make a crustless quiche for breakfast. I added in some mushrooms and black olives for an extra burst of flavor. To season the quiche, I used an herbal salt substitute, but unfortunately, it ended up having a bit too much black pepper for my liking. However, Ella and I still enjoyed the dish and finished it off with no complaints. The combination of the savory mushrooms and saltiness of the black olives created a delicious and satisfying breakfast option. Even though the seasoning may not have been perfect, it didn't take away from the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of our breakfast.
WEATHER:
LUNCH: For lunch I made a casserole with chicken, rice, carrots and peas. I then topped it with a can of condensed cream of chicken soup. It turned out pretty tasty and used up the three chicken drumsticks left over from Friday's potluck.
SPEAKING of potlucks, tomorrow is the fifth Sunday of this month. Cross Tracks Church had a tradition of having a potluck after worship on every fifth Sunday. We are taking a vegetable fingerfood tray. I'm also taking a pot of pinto beans. I soaked them all day and started slowly cooking overnight with some chunks of pork belly. If I have time in the morning I'll remove the pork and flash fry it crispy before adding it back to the beans. If I don't have time I'll just leave it alone.

COFFEE KLATSCH: This morning's coffee and gossip was a lively one, with Tom, Avis, Dianna, Michelle, Joan, Grace, Suzie, Val, Donna, Jo, and Ella all gathering together. Connie arrived a little later, joining in on the conversation and catching up on the latest news. Ella and I brought some delicious treats to share, including oatmeal apple pie cookies and apple turnover bites. As we sipped our coffee, the topics of the day ranged from visiting family to feelings of loneliness. We also reminisced about our past jobs and shared some laughs. One particularly amusing topic was Avis's dog Cookie, who had just gotten her butt hairs trimmed the day before. We all couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of Cookie's reaction to this grooming session. It was a wonderful morning spent with friends and treats, making for a good start to our day..
UPSTAIRS COFFEE: Andria, Donna, Linda, Shirley, Ella, and I also had coffee in the craft room. These are folks who didn't feel welcomed by or don't want to associate with the downstairs coffee group. I just came to see what was going on. They were just leaving when I arrived.

LUNCH: Making butter beans from scratch was a new experience for me, as I had only ever fixed lima beans before. Despite my previous experience with cooking beans, I was a little disappointed with the end result. However, I am determined to not let the leftovers go to waste and have decided to "doctor" them up in hopes of making them better. I am eager to experiment and add different flavors and ingredients to enhance the taste and texture of the beans. Hopefully, with a little creativity and some extra effort, I will be able to turn my disappointment into satisfaction and create a delicious dish out ollll
IMAGING: Ella had been living with excruciating pain in her left shoulder for years, a result of an old injury that never quite healed properly. But now, she is one step closer to finding relief. After multiple doctor appointments and consultations, she finally had a CT scan of her shoulder joint, providing a detailed image of the damage and giving her doctors a clear understanding of what they would be dealing with during the surgery. It was a major breakthrough in her journey towards getting her shoulder replaced, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of hope and anticipation. She knew that this scan was a crucial step towards improving her quality of life and regaining the use of her left arm.
HAPPY HOUR: Happy hour was a success tonight as I prepared one dozen chicken drumsticks by oven baking them to a crispy golden doneness. To add even more flavor, I coated the drumsticks with a quarter pound of butter and a generous amount of Frank's Hot Sauce. These mouth-watering chicken legs were the perfect addition to the potluck. We also brought along an apple pie that we received from the local food pantry. By the end of the night, there were only three chicken legs left, proving that they were an absolute hit. It was a rewarding feeling to see everyone enjoying the food, especially knowing that we were able to contribute to the potluck with the resources provided by the food pantry. The chicken drumsticks were a crowd-pleaser. Overall, happy hour was a great success.

OVER THE HILL GANG: Today's baked potato lunch was a hit, with a minimum of 50 people in attendance. The spread of assorted toppings, from classic sour cream and chives to more adventurous options like brisket bits and salsa, ensured that everyone could personalize their potato to their liking. The side dishes were plentiful, offering a variety of salads, breads, and vegetables to accompany the main dish. And for those with a sweet tooth, the abundance of desserts ranging from decadent cakes, cobblers, brownies, and fruit salad was a delight. After enjoying the delicious meal, guests engaged in lively games and conversations, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with good food and great company.
WEATHER:
NEWS: 1. A tragic shooting happened at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, 2025. A shooter named Robin Westman killed two children and injured 17 others during Mass. The transgender shooter was born as Robert Westman, died by suicide. The FBI is investigating the motive behind the shooting.
2. Locally a $48 million project is underway in Leander on Crystal Falls Parkway near us. It is set to bring approximately 155,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and office space including a new Texas Roadhouse set to open later this year.

CANASTA at OTHG: All five of us, Sandy, Anne, Nathern, Ella, and I were there to play cards today. We ran out of time and never finished a game. Charlie made a lasagna type of lunch for us and finished it with ice cream.
WEATHER:
BALANCING: I spent time updating our checking balance sheet and paying bills including September's rent.
NEWS: 1. SpaceX successfully launched its Starship rocket and deployed eight dummy satellites into space before safely splashing down in the Indian Ocean.
This was a major milestone for SpaceX, as they aim to use the Starship to send astronauts to the moon and eventually to Mars. No astronauts were on board for this test flight.
2. Longer thumbs mean bigger brains. The study found that primates with longer thumbs tend to have bigger brains. This suggests that as our ancestors became better at using their hands for tasks like picking up small objects, their brains also grew to handle these skills. This connection between thumb length and brain size can be seen across all primates, including humans. This shows that our advanced hand abilities and large brains evolved together over time.
3. The Israeli military targeted a Gaza hospital, thinking it was being used by Hamas to spy on them. The strike killed innocent civilians, including journalists. Hamas denied operating any cameras at the hospital.
4. Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook is suing President Trump for firing her, which is the first time a governor has been terminated in the bank's 111-year history. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 allows the president to fire a board member if there is a good reason. Trump accused Cook of committing mortgage fraud to lower her monthly payments. The Federal Reserve is structured as a quasi-private entity and determines monetary policy with a mix of president-appointed governors and regional bank presidents.

COFFEE KLATSCH: This morning, a group of friends and I gathered for our daily coffee klatsch. Among us were Sandy, Muriel, Maria, Nancy, Ella, Diana, Michelle, Joan, Grace, Suzie, Val, Jo, Jan, and myself. As we sipped our coffee, our conversation bounced from topic to topic with an energetic frenzy. Puzzle pictures and broken arms were discussed with equal enthusiasm as we shared stories and updates on each other's lives. The chatter was filled with laughter and exclamations as we caught up on the latest news about our children and pets. The room was alive with the sounds of friendship and camaraderie, creating a joyful cacophony that made it difficult to follow any one conversation thread. Despite the chaos, it was a wonderful morning spent in the company of friends..
BREAKFAST: This morning, I decided to make something different for breakfast and opted for tiny pancakes using silicone egg rings. I was excited to see how they would turn out, but unfortunately, they ended up getting a little too brown on one side. Despite this setback, I still paired them with a cooked egg and a sausage patty. The combination of the pancakes with the savory taste of the egg and sausage created a well-balanced and satisfying meal. Although my pancakes didn't turn out as expected, I was still pleased with the end result and enjoyed my breakfast. It just goes to show that even when things don't go as planned, there is always a way to make the best of it..

FREE PIZZA: Here is the price of a free medium two-topping pizza. With a $2 tip it came to $11.63 which is better than the $27.49 it would have cost. I don't remember pizza being that expensive. I suppose they have some way of blaming it on high tariffs.
WEATHER:
FIVE CROWNS: Ella and I played a game of 5 Crowns this afternoon.
GAMES: There were three games going this evening; Properties Motion, Five Crowns, and Mexican Train. It's nice to see more activities taking place
NEWS: 1. Starship 10 successfully went suborbital and launched dummy satellites as planned. Booster completed its “landing” in the Gulf of America. Starship successfully “landed” in the Indian Ocean as planned.
2. A dangerous flesh-eating parasite — the larva of the new world screwworm fly — can devastate cattle herds and is rife in parts of Central America. It has been found in a person in the US for the first time. This was confirmed by the CDC and Maryland Health Department on August 4th. The person infected had recently been to El Salvador.
3. SpaceX had to cancel their rocket launch for the second time in a row due to technical issues. The first attempt was called off because of an oxygen leak, and the second attempt was canceled because of a nearby dangerous cloud. They will try again for a third time at 7:30 pm tonight.
4. President Trump fired Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook, cited allegations by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte that she had made false statements on applications for home mortgages. Cook denies the allegations and refuses to resign.
5. Elon Musk is suing Apple and OpenAI, claiming they are working together to limit competition in the AI market. He believes Apple is unfairly benefiting OpenAI and ChatGPT in the app store, hurting other AI companies like his own xAI. Musk wants to win money and stop these alleged illegal actions through the lawsuit. This legal action is based on a partnership between Apple and OpenAI, which Musk sees as a plot to hinder rivals during a major technological advancement.

2. SpaceX recently launched a mission for the US Space Force using the X-37B spaceplane, which can stay in orbit for years.
3. Waymo can now test its self-driving cars in New York City for the first time. They have been given permission to use up to eight vehicles in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn until late September. A trained safety operator must always be in the driver's seat with one hand on the wheel. Waymo cannot pick up passengers and must report data to the city regularly.
4. Russia claims that Ukraine sent a drone to start a fire at a nuclear power plant. In response, Russia launched multiple drones and a ballistic missile at Ukraine on their Independence Day.
5. Scientists have discovered a new way to make aluminum see-through like glass. This material, called transparent aluminum oxide (TAIOx), is very strong, heat-resistant, and hard to scratch. Before, it was expensive and complicated to make TAIOx, but now researchers at Ateneo de Manila University have found a simple method using just a few drops of acid and electricity. This breakthrough could lead to super strong screens for phones and tablets, clear armor for spaceships, and tough coatings for vehicles and sensors.

NOTHING: That's what we did today. After coming home from church we heated some frozen meals, ate, napped, read, played games, and watched entertainment.
VERSE: 19:15-21 When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16 But he lingered, so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and left him outside the city. 17 When they had brought them outside, they said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the plain; flee to the hills, or else you will be consumed.” 18 And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords; 19 your servant has found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life, but I cannot flee to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake me and I die. 20 Look, that city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!” 21 He said to him, “Very well, I grant you this favor too and will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

BRUNCH: The LIFE church brought us a delicious brunch filled with warm and comforting food. As we gathered around the tables, we sang hymns and praised the Lord together. During the service, the pastor delivered a powerful message about kindness, using the example of David showing kindness to Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan. David not only restored Mephibosheth's land but also gave him a place at his table, treating him as his own son. This act of kindness teaches us the importance of showing compassion and generosity, especially to those who are in need or marginalized in our society. It also reminds us to see others through God's eyes and treat them with love and respect, regardless of their circumstances. The message reminded us of the power of extending grace and love to others just as God has shown us His endless love and grace.

NEWS: 1. Israel called up 60,000 reservists to prepare for a military offensive in Gaza City. They are considering a ceasefire proposal that would release some hostages, but they want all hostages released before agreeing to any deal. Hamas has agreed to the ceasefire proposal.
2. Uganda has agreed to take in certain migrants from other African countries who have been denied asylum in the US. These migrants must not have criminal records and cannot be unaccompanied minors. This deal is similar to agreements made by other African countries like Rwanda, Eswatini, and South Sudan. The details of the agreement, including the number of migrants Uganda will receive and when this will begin, have not been shared publicly.
3. A New York appeals court upheld a civil fraud ruling against President Trump and his sons for inflating property values to secure loans. They were ordered to pay back over $350M in ill-gotten gains, but the court voided a $527M penalty as excessive. The judges were split on whether to dismiss the case or have a retrial. Ultimately, the fraud finding and restrictions on the Trumps' dealings in New York were upheld.

4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. -NRSVUE-
π£️COMMENT: The book of Psalms is filled with beautiful poetry, hymns, and prayers that express the deep and intimate relationship between God and His people. One of the most famous and beloved Psalms is Psalm 103, which begins with the powerful words, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.” These words have become a mantra for believers, reminding us to give thanks and praise to God with all our heart, mind, and soul.
As I meditate on these words, I am struck by the intensity and passion behind them. The psalmist is not simply saying, “Thank you” to God, but rather commanding his entire being to bless and honor the Lord. It is a call to action, a reminder to not hold back in our worship and adoration of God.
BONUS: Praying using ACTS examples.
A - Adoration: Begin by focusing on praising God for His attributes, character, majesty, and goodness. Examples of adoration:
"Heavenly Father, you are worthy of all praise and adoration."
"Lord, your creation speaks of your greatness; how wonderful you are to have crafted such intricate beauty."
Scripture that expresses praise, like Psalm 95:1-6, can also be recited.
C - Contrition (or Confession): Acknowledge sins and shortcomings before God. This is about seeking His forgiveness and accepting His grace.
"Father, I confess that I have fallen short in these areas (mention specific sins or struggles)."
"I ask for your forgiveness and cleansing, knowing that your blood shed for me covers all my sin."
T - Thanksgiving: Express gratitude for all the blessings God has bestowed upon you – both big and small, tangible and spiritual.
"Thank you, Lord, for my salvation, your daily provision, and your unwavering love."
"I am thankful for my family, my friends, my health, and for this new day you have given me."
"I thank you for all of creation – the beauty of the earth, the trees, the stars, the sun and moon."
S - Supplication: Finally, present your requests and needs to God, both for yourself and for others (intercession).
"I pray for your guidance in my life, and for wisdom in the decisions I face. I also pray for my friends and family, for their health, safety, and for them to know you more deeply. Please bless those in need and bring healing and peace to our world,

2. California Democrats are proposing a plan to send more Democrats to Washington to balance the potential Republican gains in Texas.
3. A new satellite was sent into space to monitor Earth's changing surfaces by detecting movements as small as a fraction of an inch in the planet's crust. It has a large radar antenna that was folded up like an umbrella before being unfurled in a complex process. This satellite, named NISAR, is a collaboration between NASA and the Indian space agency ISRO. It was launched on July 30 and took more than two weeks to unfold its 39-foot wide antenna, the largest ever used on a NASA mission.
4. President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy met at the White House to discuss ending Russia's war on Kyiv. Zelenskyy had European leaders with him for support. It was a much nicer meeting than their last one, where Zelenskyy was criticized for not being grateful enough for US help. This time, they were both friendly and thanked each other for their efforts.

BREAKFAST: Last night, my wife came down with a stomach bug and was feeling quite unwell. As her loving husband, I wanted to do something to make her feel better and lift her spirits. So, I decided to whip up a batch of delicious pancakes using Krusteaz pancake mix, a can of applesauce, and three eggs. Not only would it be a comforting and easy-to-digest meal for her upset tummy, but it would also provide her with some much-needed protein. I carefully ignored the instructions on the pancake mix and added in the applesauce and eggs to make the batter extra fluffy and nutritious. The aroma of the pancakes cooking in the kitchen filled our home and brought a smile to my wife's face. She eagerly devoured the pancakes, and I could see how much they helped soothe her tummy troubles. It may have been a simple gesture, but seeing my wife feeling better and enjoying the pancakes filled me with joy and satisfaction. It just goes to show that a little bit of love and homemade cooking can go a long way in making someone feel better.

πCANASTA: "In the game of Canasta, there were two teams: 'Them' and 'Us.' 'Them' consisted of Sandy and Ella, while 'Us' was made up of Anne and I. Today, it seemed that luck was not on our side as 'Them' emerged as the victors. Despite our best efforts, they beat us at Canasta. As we gathered around the table, tallying up the points, it was clear that 'Them' had outplayed us or just had luck on their side. Yet, as disappointed as we were in the defeat, we couldn't help but laugh and enjoy the friendly competition. After all, it wasn't about who won or lost, but about the fun and camaraderie shared between friends. Even though 'Them' may have won this round, we were already looking forward to our next game and determined to come out on top."
πLUNCH: After returning home from Liberty Hill, I couldn't wait to indulge in a comforting and satisfying meal. As soon as I got home, I began preparing some delicious homemade chicken nuggets. I carefully seasoned and coated each piece of chicken before dropping them into the sizzling hot oil. The aroma of the crispy nuggets filled my kitchen, making my mouth water in anticipation. As they cooked to a golden perfection, I whipped up some creamy mashed potatoes and warmed some canned spinach for a well-rounded meal. To add a touch of sweetness, I served up some juicy peach slices on the side. The contrast of flavors and textures in this dish was simply irresistible. With each bite, I couldn't help but savor the flavors.

FIRETRUCK: As I lay awake but not yet prepared to get out of bed, the growl of a firetruck's engine and the hiss of airbrakes caught my attention. Curious, I walked over to the bedroom window and saw a group of firemen heading towards the side entrance of my building. The absence of a siren on the truck and any alarms in the building, along with the lack of an accompanying EMS vehicle, left me wondering what could possibly be happening. After a brief moment, the firemen returned to their truck and drove away, leaving me puzzled and intrigued. I couldn't help but wonder about the possible emergency that had prompted their visit. My thought was that it was just enough time to help get someone up from the floor. It was a strange and unexpected occurrence, but it certainly added an element of excitement to my morning routine.

LUNCH: Today, I was feeling like having a hearty lunch and decided to fry some chicken breasts. As the chicken was cooking, I noticed the delicious crispy drippings in the pan and immediately had the idea to make gravy out of it. I quickly whipped up a simple gravy using flour, butter, water and the drippings, which added a rich and flavorful touch to the dish. To complete the meal, I turned to my trusty Instapot to make some sticky rice and used the microwave to heat some canned asparagus. Within a short amount of time, lunch came together with the perfect combination of crispy chicken, savory gravy, fluffy rice, and a side of mushy asparagus. Asparagus from a can is nowhere as good as fresh but it is what I had on hand. It was a satisfying and well-balanced meal that required minimal effort but still felt like a home-cooked treat. Sometimes, the simplest meals can turn out to be the most delicious ones.

GAMES: This evening in the community room was game night with two different games being played. Four of us chose to play canasta, a popular and strategic game that requires players to form melds and make strategic moves. As we shuffled and dealt the cards, we chatted and caught up on each other's lives. Meanwhile, three others decided to play Mexican Train, a domino game that involves matching numbers and building a train. The sound of laughter and friendly banter filled the room as we all enjoyed each other's company and engaged in friendly competition. It was a fun and enjoyable evening spent with friends, bonding over our shared love for games. It was a great way to spend quality time with our community members.

☕COFFEE BAR AT CHURCH: Every Sunday morning, my bride and I have a routine of arriving at Cross Tracks Church a little before eight. This has become our tradition as we are the designated volunteers responsible for unlocking the doors, setting up the chairs, making the coffee, and setting out the goodies for the congregation. It is a small task, but it brings us joy to serve our community in this way. As we enter the church and prepare for the service, we can feel the peacefulness and warmth of the community that gathers here every week. The act of unlocking the doors symbolizes opening our hearts to each other and to God's love. As we arrange the chairs and set up for coffee and snacks, we are reminded of the importance of coming together as a community to support and uplift one another. This simple act of service has become a meaningful part of our Sunday mornings, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our church in this way..
πSUNDAY SCHOOL: We are finishing Amy-Jill Levine's book “Difficult Words of Jesus”. It has interesting chapter titles like Sell What You Own, Hate Father And Mother, Slave Of All, Nowhere Smoking The Gentiles, Outer Darkness, And Your Father The Devil.
We will begin a study that is about setting up a Dinner Church. So it really isn't a Bible study but a coaching of how to better involve or be involved in the community. The book we will use is, “Welcome to Dinner, Church” by Verlon Fosner. Our church had chosen to call our endeavor Community Table.
πWORSHIP: Everybody is getting ready for school to start. Today was the blessing of the backpacks. Actually it was a blessing of the students and educators but was called blessing the backpacks.

LUNCH: One large chicken breast was carefully deboned, flattened, and cut into ½” cubes. It was then boiled in a mixture of chicken and vegetable stock, infused with parsley flakes and a sprinkle of salt for added flavor. Once the chicken was cooked through, it was seasoned to taste with pepper and sage. Meanwhile, homemade egg noodles were prepared with two small eggs, ⅛ cup of water, a generous pinch of sea salt, and flour (about 1 to 2 cups) to form a thick dough. The dough was rolled out thinly and cut into noodles before being dropped into the boiling broth. As the noodles cooked, more water was added to prevent the dish from becoming too thick. After about a minute or two, the noodles were done. Don't worry they couldn't be overcooked. To accompany this hearty meal, a generous serving of mashed potatoes was made. The chicken and noodles were then served in a well formed in the creamy mashed potatoes. This delicious and comforting meal comes together quickly and is perfect for a cozy night in. It's the epitome of good country food that can be enjoyed in no time at all.π SECOND HAND SATURDAY: Ella took some clothing items to the rummage exchange. I had a pair of sneakers to donate but didn't get them to the community room before the cutoff time.
At one o'clock Ella and I went to see what we could see. I took nothing but these two photographs.

☕COFFEE KLATSCH: Dianna, Joan, Grace, Suzie, Val, Nancy, Ella, and I were at coffee this morning. Suzie brought some brownies made from her mother's recipe. They were very moist and had plenty of cocoa powder. Very good.
π·RATAT TAT TAT: The relentless pound, pound, pounding had become the new soundtrack to our lives. For nearly a month, it had been a jarring chorus, a metallic woodpecker pecking away at the solid rock of the empty lot next to our apartment building. It started every morning at 7 a.m. sharp, a rude awakening that shook us from our slumber and refused to let up until after 5 p.m. Imagine an insistent knocking on your front door that never stops—all day, every day. That was our reality.
The constant noise was a daily assault on our peace and sanity. After a few weeks of this torment, a complaint was filed with the city, a desperate plea for quiet. We didn't have high hopes, but this morning, a curious silence lingered past the usual 7 a.m. start time. A glimmer of hope sparked within me as the clock ticked past 8:00, then 8:15. Finally, at 8:30 a.m., the first tap echoed through the walls. A small victory, perhaps? It seemed the city official might have paid them a visit after all. The noise was still there, but at least now we had a fighting chance at a full night's sleep.

π²LUNCH: The air in the Leander 50+ hall was filled with the warm, comforting scent of goulash, a welcome aroma that promised a hearty meal. We all settled in, plates piled high with the rich American Goulash, a dish featuring ground beef, macaroni, and tomatoes which was served with a crisp green salad, soft rolls, and a cup of creamy banana pudding waiting patiently for its turn.
As we ate, our speaker, Pauline D. Salazar, was introduced. As the CEO of Passport and Visa Company, she was an expert in her field. She spoke with a clear and confident tone about her business, which she founded. She explained how they provide a fast, efficient, and trouble-free service, helping people navigate the often-confusing world of passports and visas. It was clear from her presentation that she leads a top-notch team, dedicated to making international travel as smooth as possible for their clients.
π️NEWS: In a recent interview, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel plans to establish military dominance over the entirety of the Gaza Strip. The main objectives of this action are to eliminate Hamas and ensure the security of the area. However, Netanyahu clarified that Israel does not intend to govern the region permanently and instead intends to hand over control to Arab forces. Specific details of this plan were not disclosed by Netanyahu.
πHAPPY HOUR: There were about two dozen people there for our end of the week potluck but only four or five of us brought food. I brought an Instapot full of homemade chili, and someone brought BLTs on hamburger buns. There was a store-bought pecan pie and a bag of chips with dip. There was also a spicy pasta casserole.

πYEARS PAST: The following are snippets from this blog over the last few years. Still older searches would have to go to my earlier blog, https://rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com/
(Aug.8,2024)HEAT ADVISORY now in effect until 8 PM CDT Friday. Temperatures as high as 104 and heat index values up to 110.)
(Aug. 8, 2023 The trip to the oral surgeon helped us understand the procedure a little better. Ella will be sedated. The surgery will take an hour to an hour and a half with a half hour recovery time.)
(Aug 8, 2022 From twelve to four we were interviewed and examined by a home health nurse sent by our insurance company. This was a full yearly wellness exam.)
(Aug 8 2021) We needed to grab a fast lunch after worship service because there was a special charge conference at church one and a half hours after church. The church has the option to purchase a small triangle of land that borders our property. We don't NEED it but we don't want someone to purchase it and build something that obscures the church from the highway.)
(Aug 8, 2020 I emptied the holding tanks [we were still living in our RV] and made a couple of cuts in a board for a sink cover. Let's see, what else? Oh, I proofread my sermon for September 13th. Be that as it may, we rested.)
(Aug 8, 2019 After breakfast we went to the cafe [at Cutty's Camping Club in Grimes Iowa] and found more of the gang had returned. Sandy and Francis, Stoney and Sue, Bob, Ella and I.
At the senior center, we had Swedish meatballs with potatoes and gravy*. Except the meatballs were missing allspice and cardamom. The gravy had neither milk, cream, or sour cream in it. It was just a gelatinous brown mass. You can call a cow a horse. But that doesn't make it a horse. *And these were not Swedish meatballs.)
πVERSE: Matthew 16:24 NRSVUE Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
π£️COMMENT: “Take Up Your Cross” was meant to shock Jesus listeners because crucifixion was reserved for the most heinous criminals and was designed to be as excruciating and humiliating as possible. Victims were first subjected to a savage beating, and then they were forced to carry the heavy wooden crossbeam to the execution site, a painful and disgraceful act. So Jesus was not just asking, “Are you willing to die for me ?” He was saying in effect, “Are you willing to be publicly humiliated and physically tortured because you are my follower?”
Dying for one's belief may be easier than living one's belief in the face of humiliation and pain. In essence Jesus is expanding the first of the ten commandments. The scripture "Have no gods before me" is found in Exodus 20:3. It emphasizes that God is to be the sole object of worship and that no other gods, idols, or even priorities should take His place in one's life, not even one's own life.

VERSE OF THE DAY: Proverbs 29:18 (NIV) : "Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction,"
COMMENT: This verse highlights the significance of God's revelation and wisdom in guiding and restraining us. Without the knowledge and understanding of God's will, people are prone to make reckless decisions and act without restraint. However, those who seek and heed wisdom's instruction are considered blessed. This verse serves as a reminder that God's guidance and wisdom are essential for a fulfilling and meaningful life. It also emphasizes the importance of listening to and following God's teachings, as they can lead us on the right path and protect us from harm. In a world full of distractions and temptations, it is crucial to seek God's revelation and wisdom to guide us through life with wisdom, caution, and purpose.

BEARD TRAINING: With only 96 days left until Santa's grand arrival at Lakeline Mall, it's time for me to start preparing my beard for the big day. As a professional Santa Claus, I know that a well-groomed beard is an essential part of the role. While it may seem like an easy task, shaping and brightening my beard takes careful planning and training. It may still be a little early to start the process of making my white beard appear even brighter with blueing, but I know that time will fly by quickly. I have been in training as well. I have been practicing sitting in one place for long periods of time and smiling. It may seem like a simple task, but it can take a lot of effort to maintain the jolly spirit and charm of Santa Claus for eight to ten hours straight. So yes, even though you may think it's easy, being Santa is no easy feat. But with dedication and practice, I am ready to bring the magic of Christmas to children and adults alike at Lakeline Mall.

πGAMES: Ella and I were excited to spend our Saturday afternoon playing Canasta with our friends Ann and Jo in the community room. As we set up the cards, we couldn't help but notice the other games scattered around the room, including Mexican Train and Rummikub. It was heartwarming to see so many people coming together to enjoy some friendly competition and laughter. The sound of shuffling cards, click of tiles, playful banter, and occasional cheers filled the room, creating a lively atmosphere. It was a refreshing change from our usual weekend routine, and we were grateful for the opportunity to socialize and have some fun. The community room may have just been a simple space, but it brought us all together and created memories that we would cherish for a long time.
NEWS: 1. In 2019, a Tesla car using the Autopilot technology was involved in a fatal crash where a young woman was killed in Florida. The driver claimed he was using the Autopilot feature when the accident occurred. The jury found Tesla partially responsible and ordered them to pay $243 million in damages. This case could set an important precedent for future lawsuits involving self-driving technology.
2. The Presidential Fitness Test is coming back to schools after 12 years. It was originally started in the 1950s to test the physical fitness of American kids compared to kids in Europe. Students used to do exercises like running, pushups, and situps to earn awards. President Obama changed the test in 2012 to be less competitive. But now President Trump is bringing back the original test to make sure kids are staying active.

☕COFFEE BAR: We arrived at Cross Tracks Church at 7:52 and unlocked the doors. Mike and Peggy brought cookies, water, and other treats for the coffee bar. There were over 100 tacos left over from an event at the church yesterday. Those went out this morning also. People were encouraged to take some home. Ella did. She didn't know that I had already prepared a stew for our lunch. We will have the tacos tomorrow.
πSUNDAY SCHOOL: The Outer Darkness was the topic of today's study. Pastor Brad came to introduce the new youth pastor, Sam. While the Pastor was there he gave us his take on God's justice and the fourth century concept of hell.
πWORSHIP: This Good Earth: Worry Not
π²LUNCH: Before leaving for church this morning, I made sure to start the Instapot full of homemade beef stew. I knew that by the time we returned home, the savory aroma of the stew would fill our house, welcoming us back from our morning service. As soon as we arrived, I quickly got to work on making some dumpling dough*. I rolled the dough into a ball and cut it into four equal balls before dropping them into the already boiling stew. Within just a few minutes, the dumplings were perfectly cooked and ready to be served. The hearty beef stew with tender chunks of meat and vegetables, combined with the soft and fluffy dumplings, was the perfect meal to end our Sunday morning. Nothing beats coming home to a delicious and comforting meal that was cooking and waiting for us while we were away. It was a simple but satisfying way to start our day off right..

π±/π§NO WATER/WATER: At noon when my bride and I arrived home from church, we were met with the news that there was no water available in the apartments due to a broken water main. While this may have caused panic for some, we were prepared for such situations. As part of our emergency preparedness plan, we had stored numerous gallons of water for flushing and washing, as well as cases of bottled drinking water. Thankfully, by one o'clock, the issue was resolved and we had running water from the tap, refilling the stool tank. This experience reminded us of the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations and the peace of mind it brings knowing that we have necessary resources readily available.
*DUMPLING DOUGH made the easy way. I broke one egg into the mixing bowl of the stand mixer and gave it a quick stir. With the mixer going I added buttermilk pancake mix a heaping spoonful at a time until a somewhat sticky dough formed that began to clean the sides of the bowl. That yielded a dough ball about the size of a tennis ball which I quartered.

CLEANING: Despite being in the middle of summer, my bride Ella and I recently tackled some much-needed spring cleaning. Over the course of a few days, we swept, mopped, and reorganized our living space, feeling a sense of satisfaction with each task completed. Ella took charge of the living area, while I focused on tidying up the kitchen. As we worked, we couldn't help but reflect on how refreshing and revitalizing it felt to declutter our spaces and start anew. Even though we may have missed the official spring cleaning season, the act of purging and organizing brought a renewed sense of energy and order into our living space.
